Room design
How we read a room
A room is not a volume to be filled with light. It is a bed, a trolley, a cupboard that casts a shadow, a door that opens, and the hours people are in it. The study starts from those, and the number of units comes last. Here is one worked example from an installation of ours.
Installation example
One room, three units
One unit on the ceiling over the bed, 100°, straight down; one mid-room, 60°, aimed into the instrument cupboard, whose doors stay open overnight; one 60° in the corner by the door. Runs overnight, automatically, no switch.
Irradiance on the 0.85 m plane
00.51.02.5 µW/cm²
0.6
µW/cm² mean on the plane of the bed and trolley
2.6
µW/cm² maximum, under the corner unit
Manufacturer's calculation
Whole-room mean 2.65 µW/cm² across every surface the light reaches · 90% reduction in 8 min, 99.9% in 24 min at that mean. UV Medico calculation output for this room.
Exposure
Duty cycle set by the installer so that no point at eye height exceeds 23 mJ/cm² in any 8 hours — Directive 2006/25/EC. LiDAR cuts the unit if anyone comes close.
Plan drawn by Icarus 222 from the manufacturer's calculation model; proportions from that model, not a survey drawing. Field computed on the 0.85 m plane from UV Medico's published outputs (115 mW at 60°, 70 mW at 100°), a cosine-power beam and shadowing by the equipment trolley and the cupboard body. The manufacturer's whole-room mean averages walls, floor and furniture, including the surfaces beside each unit, which is why it is higher than the working-plane figure.
Aim at what matters
Light disinfects what it reaches. The instruments are stored in the cupboard, so one unit is aimed into it and the last person out leaves its doors open; the bed gets its own unit from directly above. The equipment trolley still throws a wedge behind the bed — floor nobody works at during the night.
The plane that matters
A whole-room average flatters every installation, because the wall beside a unit counts as much as the bed. We read the plane of the bed, the trolley and the worktops — 0.85 m — and plan the running hours from that.
Three placements, one chosen
The manufacturer modelled three. A floor-standing unit gave a higher mean but a hot spot of 120 µW/cm² beside it; moving the same three units lost a sixth of the mean. The first placement went in.

How your installation takes shape
One conversation, at your site or ours. Then a study of your rooms.
A walk through your rooms with people who have done this in pharmaceutical production, a hospital and a biobank
Lamp positions and fluence rate modelled for your geometry, checked against the EU exposure limit for 222 nm
How the limit will be held in your rooms — duty cycle, sensors, signage — and how the result will be verified on site
What your QA will ask for, and the documents that answer it
What it will cost to install, and what it costs to run
A realistic timeline, from order to commissioning
Designed in conversation, built on experience.
Tell us what you are protecting. What we have learned from every installation so far goes into the study of your rooms — and your installation is set up for the best result they can give.
